The Province Must Act

The demands being placed on the province’s rural and remote policing Members is rapidly increasing. As public safety becomes more complex, a new approach is needed—one that includes a stronger RCMP presence, enhanced social services, and greater support for mental health, addiction, housing, and other critical services.

Investments in Newfoundland and Labrador’s public safety have not been keeping up and adapting to the changing nature and levels of crime:

  • The rate of police officers per population in Newfoundland and Labrador has dropped by 7.5% over the last decade – from 174 officers per 100,000 people in 2013 to 161 in 2023 – one of the lowest rates in the country.
  • Mental Health Act calls and well-being checks have increased by 156% from 2016 to 2023.
  • Overall crime in NL has steadily increased by 20% increase over 5 years (2019-2023), according to the Statistics Canada Crime Severity Index.

RCMP Member Value to Residents

Newfoundland and Labrador benefit from an incredibly valuable agreement for RCMP policing services. Through the Provincial Police Service Agreement (PPSA) between the Governments of Newfoundland and Labrador and Canada, 30% of all RCMP policing costs are covered by the federal government.

This means that the Province – and all taxpayers – are only responsible for paying for the remaining 70% of RCMP policing costs. Based on the 2024 Budget, this represents savings of approximately $30 million annually. This savings is then able to be invested in the Province’s hospitals, schools, roads, and other needs.
