RCMP Members  play a vital role in maintaining the safety and security of Canada’s northern communities. Policing Canada’s rugged, vast and breathtaking northern region is a challenge.

These Members live and work in these areas for many resons such as the diverse policing experience and breathtaking landscape. 

To ensure the safety and well-being of everyone, RCMP Members receive specialized training to handle the unique challenges of policing in the North, including cultural sensitivity and crisis intervention training. [Statista, 2019]

RCMP Members Work in Nearly 60 Detachments Throughout the Region

These detachments are strategically located to cover vast and remote areas. The RCMP also service communities that are accessible by air only, ensuring that communities throughout the North receive essential policing services [rcmp.ca].

106,166 Calls for Service (2023)

RCMP Members in the the Yukon, Northwest Territories, and Nunavut responded to a combined 106,166 police-related events in 2023 [rcmp.ca].

Communities in the North benefit from over 150 specialized services provided by our highly trained RCMP Members, including:

Search and Rescue, Air Services, Community Policing, Indigenous Policing Services, Traffic Services, Major Crime Units, Drug and Organized Crime Units, Emergency Response Teams (ERT), Police Dog Services (PDS), and more.

Our Members play a vital role in supporting community well-being.

Because our Members are so deeply integrated in the communities where they live and work, they understand the unique needs of each community.

By fostering strong partnerships with local leaders, partner agencies, and community members, they can adapt their response approach to better address crime. Their programs, focused on Indigenous policing, drug awareness, and youth safety, create a safer and more connected community for everyone.
