Merritt, BC

Last Updated: January 27, 2025

The City of Merritt is considering reducing RCMP positions in order to balance their upcoming budget. This potential cut to policing resources has been proposed following a record-breaking year for crime in Merritt. A reduction of any positions would also risk the ability to continue 24-hour policing, potentially leading to slower response times under an on-call system.

The evolving nature of crime in Merritt, along with changing expectations for policing, underscores the growing challenges officers face in meeting community needs—especially in situations that demand significant time and resources due to pressures from external systems. Eliminating any RCMP resources in a city dealing with rising crime would be detrimental to citizens and businesses.
